The Oxford dictionary is the final authority on the English language People respect it a great deal and people all over the world are using it when they are concerned with speak english.

The Oxford dictionary has been around for over 100 years.  It was way back in 1857.  The Philological society determined that current English-language dictionaries weren’t complete. Their plan was to begin from square one. Little did they know the size of the project they had just undertaken.

The development of the Oxford dictionary had taken a big step in 1879 when the society made an agreement with the Oxford University press to begin work on a new dictionary of the English language.  The name was to be the New English Dictionary.  It was planned to be four volumes, 6400 pages.  It would go back as far as 1150 AD.  The goal was to finish the work in a decade. It is a great matter that this lexicon endures as we see contemporary issues depending on whether or not a person is engaged with how to speak italian.

This Oxford dictionary was as far as ant in five years.  Clearly they were behind schedule.  One problem was the constant evolution of English.  While working on new words they were constantly changing the descriptions of the old ones.  That’s not easy while looking at seven centuries of language. They toiled at this Oxford dictionary for forty years.  More people were brought in to help.  It had expanded to ten volumes.  It covered 400,000 words.  It was now the authority on everything having to do with the English language.  The initial 10 year mission was finally completed 30 years late.

Immediately they set about revising the Oxford dictionary.  In 1933 a supplement was published in the dictionary had expanded to 12 volumes.  This remained until 1957.  That work went on until 1972 when four more volumes were added.

In 1982 editors decided to bring the Oxford dictionary into the computer age.  The editors began transferring it from paper to electronic format.  It took $13.5 million to accomplish this.  It was a 5 year task.  In 1989 a second edition was published.  It’s 22,000 pages over 20 volumes.

The Oxford dictionary later was published on CD-ROM, and is now available online.  What an interesting journey from concept to the present.

An Italian dictionary isn’t a dictionary that will mention only the terms spaghetti and Italian sausage.  In the modern world it can be a dictionary in the Italian language, or a translator from Italian to other languages.

Some websites have an Italian dictionary which includes Italian words and then their English translations. When using these Italian dictionaries keep in mind that the Italian language only has 21 letters in its alphabet. It does not have the letter J, K, W, X or Y. So none of those letters can be used to look up words.

Here’s some words from the Italian dictionary.  The a’s include abate which means abbot.  It’s isn’t a comedian who wonders who’s on first, it’s the leader of a monastery.  Christianity and many other religions use the term.  The title is also used to describe anyone who lives in a monastery.

Another word in the Italian dictionary is antarctico. The English equivalent is what you’d expect, Antarctic. This is the Earth’s southernmost continent. It lies over the South Pole. The word comes from the Greek meaning opposite to the north. That’s a good explanation.

In 1959 twelve nations signed the Antarctic Treaty. Now 46 countries and all have signed it. The treaty prohibits military action in the Antarctic. It also prohibits mineral mining. The purpose of the treaty is to support scientific research and to protect the ecology of the area. Currently more than 4000 scientists conduct research there. Such information would be found in an Encyclopedia rather than an Italian dictionary.

Mafia isn’t found inside an Italian dictionary.  Malavita is in there.  The word refers to the underworld.  The Italian Mafia is also known as the Cosa Nostra.  It’s Sicily’s secret society.  It became prominent in the mid 1800’s.  Italians brought the society with them to New York and the USA.  Mafia has changed to refer to Italian organized crime in general, rather than just Sicilians.

Autoritratto is found in the Italian dictionary.  In English that’s self portrait.  Auto is a root meaning self.  Thus an automobile is something that moves on its own.

A look through an Italian dictionary can be quite interesting. That’s because the language contains many of the roots we use for our English words, taken from the Latin or Greek.

Many times when people want to translate between Hebrew and English they will use a Hebrew dictionary.  This could be a dictionary that describes different words in the way they looked in ancient and modern Hebrew.  Or it could be a translation from one language to Hebrew or back.

A Hebrew Research Center offers its own Hebrew dictionary.  This biblical Hebrew English dictionary shows the modern and ancient Hebrew writing for a word.  Then it shows the way it’s pronounced.  Then it gives the English translation.  For example av, the transliteration, is the word for father.  Mother is eym.  E-ven is stone.

The Internet houses yet another Hebrew dictionary.  It’s a Hebrew glossary.  Once again this one shows the Hebrew words is written by their letters, the transliteration, the English word, but then adds a description of the meaning.  This one shows Abba as father.  It’s not just father, but rather father in an endearing way like dear father.  It contains more information than other dictionaries.

Another word from this Hebrew dictionary is Adam Kadmon.  This means primordial man.  This type of being was produced by the divine as an interim step between divine and human.  This is the image of God, in human form, from which all people were created.

The Hebrew dictionary has a lot more to offer.  Mabul is a flood.  It means the flood from the story of Noah.  He’s Noach in Hebrew.  

We’re not yet done with the Hebrew dictionary. Maggid is a speaker or more specifically a preacher.  A maggid tells stories that have lessons in them.  They are very formulaic stories.  First is the introduction.  The exposition, or main body, follows.  And the conclusion describes the moral.  

Makkot is found in the Hebrew dictionary.  It means stripes.  But a zebra doesn’t have these stripes.  These stripes come from being whipped.  Whipping was a punishment given for some wrong doing. People might think twice about breaking laws if that were done in the present.

Here’s one more word from the Hebrew dictionary.  It’s a common word.  Rabbi is this word.  It means a master or teacher.  In the early days the Sanhedrin gave these men authority.  The Babylonians had an equivalent – Rav.
