i think spanish is much easier, because the pronounciation is really hard in german. if you know latin (i don't think so but if you do) german will be easier for you to learn. however, i think you should take spanish

Hi, I would like to learn German but didn't have much luck with languages at school. It sounds to me like English and German are very similar in some aspects and a lot of the worlds I hear on the TV sound virtually identical. Is this the case?

I think if I can do it any one can. I think I was lucky as I lived in germany for 5 years whilst with the Military in Paderborn and Sennelager. My children were quite small then so I got to meet other childrens mothers who were German and they offered to help me learn, It was great! one day we went to my house and spoke nothing but English to teach them, and the next day we would go to a German friends house and speak nothing but german so I learnt quite quickly as I wanted to know what they were saying (in case they were making a fool of me) We could also ask if we didnt know the word.
You will find if you are Scottish it is maybe easier to learn, as a lot of the word sound similiar, (like Gaelic).
Go to a library and get a talking learning disc, and this will help you. also a vorterbook ..german for dictionary/german English you can pick one up very cheap in any shop that sell books.
Can you not get on a course if you are the lad that is in the forces?

I am currently in my Junior year of high school and my fourth year of German (AP). I enjoy speaking the language and I seem to be proficient in it, and I was wondering, if I continue my education of it in college, what possible careers may be available?

You can *consider* translation, but it is a very specialized thing to do, and it requires someone who is content to sit all day in front of a computer screen (often at home) and work without supervision, also handling all the business end — advertising, billing, chasing overdue payments, etc.

If you want to continue on with German, and live in-country for awhile, you could consider conference interpretation — but it is admittedly quite difficult for someone who started out with one language (I'm assuming you were monolingual in English originally) and acquired his German in high school to compete with Europeans who are multilingual from a very early age. Also, to interpret professionally you would probably need more than one source language, and work only into English.

German will be an asset (but not the deal-maker) in getting various jobs in trade, or things like the Foreign Service (which will promptly post you to a place that speaks, say, Swahili, not German!)

Generally speaking, whether it's German or any other language, if you're learning it in school, your best bet unless you are passionally devoted ONLY to languages is to make darn sure you learn something else. An MBA or law degree plus German looks mighty attractive to employers. Just German doesn't.

Take it from me — major in something else. Keep taking German. But don't major in it, then find you need an MA in German, then find you can't get a job, then do a Ph.D. in German, then find you don't like university teaching….

(BTW, whoever says you can be an interpreter at the UN obviously doesn't know much about how that organziation hires linguists. But you might end up a translator there, working into English. Doubtful though.)

I have been interested in learning the German language, however, I cannot find anywhere to learn it. The school I attend does not offer German and I think that I would do better learning on my own. I need some German language software, or even internet sites, but I can't find any that are not a lot to buy, and that I don't even know if they work. Somebody please help me!

What is the practical way of learning German language?

As of now I am trying my best to learn German language. But it seems that the school where I am enrolled to (here in Switzerland) is not quite so good and practical for me. The teacher do not speak the language I know – most of the time she draw something on the board that could help us understand what she says (it is like we are back in stone age or whatever age was it when people draw something to communicate to each other). Any way I find the strategy to be so unpractical it take us more than half an hour to understand a simple sintence. Most of the learning I have about German language as of now I learn it by reading books which I bought at the books store.
I want to learn German fast and easy. There might be a book which you can recommend. Thank you.

Sounds like your school's method is immersion / the Berlitz method. The idea is that you'll learn through context as babies do. It is frustrating at first but give it some time if you can — it really is a great way to learn.

Of course I am sure you are allowed to study on your own as well and it is good you're taking the initiative. If you'd like another way of supporting your learning, buy an easy book or a magazine in a subject you like a lot along with a dictionary German -> your native language, and go for it. Comic strips can be fun, or fashion magazines (stick to the descriptions of the models at first … you are female?).
When I was in Germany as a teenager, the book "Wir Kinder von Bahnhof Zoo" by Christiana F. had just come out. It is a haunting autobiography of a girl who became addicted to heroin when she was 12. I started reading it when I was able to understand people around me a bit (mostly teenagers), so because the book is written in "teenager language", I was able to understand it and read it quite quickly. I think it helped my German a lot, I got a better feel for the language, improved my vocabulary, moved a lot of terms from "passive" to "active knowledge" …
Don't be afraid to browse the other sections of the bookstore, the children's and teenager's books, if you can understand the gist of the back cover and it sounds interesting, take it 'home' and try reading it. You may surprise yourself how well it will go.

Otherwise — IMHO, learning a language is fast and easy only if you are very talented or you already know a language that is very similar, like Dutch. Hang in there … if you're in Switzerland in an immersion course, the start will be slow but soon the day will come when you'll get a 'feel' for the language — something I think a book just can't teach you.

I would like to teach myself German, but have no one to teach me, nor any time to go to an instructor, and German is not one of the languages taught at my school. I love the lanuage so far, and I've taught myself a little, with CDs and such, but need some help in finding a decent site. Thanks!

The BBC has a good languages section in their website – excellent if you have a fast enough connection.
