Question Details: My gf is moving from Taiwan to Vancouver She will have graduated university in Taiwan with her under grad (mass com.) She would like to move to Vancouver and continue her studies. What is the best route for her to take as far as developing her trade? It seems as though there are no graduate studies for Mass communications in Vancouver. Is a graduates degree the right path to take? She will be taking a years worth of language school so transfering shouldnt be a problem. Any suggestions (links) would be great

I’m just curious. I think it would be awesome to bring it back.

For those who don’t know: The Rhinoceros Party was a registered political party in Canada from the 1960s to the 1990s. Operating within the Canadian tradition of political satire, the Rhinoceros Party’s basic credo, their so-called primal promise, was “a promise to keep none of our promises.” They then promised outlandishly impossible schemes designed to amuse and entertain the voting public. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhino_party)

Here are some of their platform promises:

    * Repealing the law of gravity
* Paving Manitoba to create the world’s largest parking lot
* Providing higher education by building taller schools
* Instituting English, French and illiteracy as Canada’s three official languages
* Tearing down the Rocky Mountains so that Albertans could see the Pacific sunset
* Making Montreal the Venice of North America by damming the St. Lawrence River
* Abolishing the environment because it’s too hard to keep clean and it takes up so much space
* Annexing the United States, which would take its place as the third territory, after the Yukon and the Northwest Territories (Nunavut did not yet exist) in Canada’s backyard, in order to eliminate foreign control of Canada’s natural resources
* Ending crime by abolishing all laws
* Paving the Bay of Fundy to create more parking in the Maritimes
* Turning Montreal’s Saint Catherine Street into the world’s longest bowling alley
* Adopting the British system of driving on the left; this was to be gradually phased in over five years with large trucks and tractors first, then buses, eventually including small cars and bicycles last
* Selling the Canadian Senate at an antique auction in California
* Putting the national debt on Visa
* Declaring war on Belgium because a Belgian cartoon character, Tintin, killed a rhinoceros in one of the cartoons
* Offering to call off the proposed Belgium-Canada war if Belgium delivered a case of mussels and a case of Belgian beer to Rhinoceros “Hindquarters” in Montréal (the Belgian Embassy in Ottawa did, in fact, do this)
* Painting Canada’s coastal sea limits in watercolour so that Canadian fish would know where they were at all times
* Banning guns and butter, since both kill
* Banning lousy Canadian winters
* Renaming the country Nantucket
* Building a bridge spanning the country, from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland.
* Making the Trans-Canada Highway one way only.
* Changing Canada’s currency to bubble gum, so it could be inflated or deflated at will.
* Donate a free rhinoceros to every aspiring artist in Canada

I listed them all just for a good laugh. I know that it was Canadian. But would you vote for a party similar to them? I ask this because of the upcoming elections. Or are you planning on voting for one of the main parties?

totally

I'm almost 20 years old, very confident and have excellent communication skills (4 languages) and extensive computer knowledge. Unfortunately, these weren't enough to pay for my student loans and I need to find something more stable and long-term.

Thanks in advance! Best regards!

I'm a 3rd year student in Computer Science and Business in Vancouver, BC, Canada. After finishing my undergraduate I was thinking of either applying for law school, going to get my MBA or starting my own business.

I'm looking for a good job that I could do while still in school, preferably in a field related to my future plans. A friend has suggested working as clerk at law firm and I'm going to drop off my resume at one soon, but I wanted to see what other options I have.

I'm almost 20 years old, very confident and have excellent communication skills (4 languages) and extensive computer knowledge. In the past I had 5 paid contracts with small laboratories and firms doing I.T. support and lots of volunteering experience involving team management and dealing with clients. Unfortunately, these weren't enough to pay for my student loans and I need to find something more stable and long-term.

Does anybody have any advice they'd be willing to offer? Thanks in advance! Best regards!

Unless you want to be a lawyer, don't go to law school. Also don't plan on getting your MBA until you have at least two years of work experience because you'll be seen as over qualified, but have too little experienced for any job. I don't mean to burst your bubble, I was really ambitious like yourself when I graduated last year with degree in Finance. I wanted to continue on and get my MBA, I even took the GMAT and sent out applications. Then a career counselor gave me the advice to go out work for a while and see what I like to do because the real world of business is very different from what your school books teach you. With a computer science and business back ground you will go far, try looking for jobs in the banking industry (they pay their IT staff really well). You get the best of both worlds technology and business. And if you stay with a company for a year, they will usually pay for you to go get your MBA. Hope this helped a little, good luck!!!

At my highschool in Vancouver, only about 15% of the students are white. And most of them just speak english (and some french of course). But the other 85% are filipino and chinese and japanese. And almost every single one speaks their other languages. When they do this at school, infront of us, then laugh, me and some of my friends feel left out. And when we ask what they said, they just shake their heads and say ‘don’t worry about it’. Sometimes even the teachers do it, and then don’t explain to the other people what they said. It is alright to ask them to stop speaking other languages infront of us? Or is that mean?
THANKS!

PS. I really hope I didnt come off racist or anything!

Personally, I think it’s rude to speak any language in front of someone else who doesn’t understand it – it’s exclusionary, and it’s especially difficult in a school that should be trying to foster inclusion and diversity appreciation.

It’s only natural that people would want to communicate in their own language – it’s easier and they can communicate more complex ideas with ease. However, it does exclude others who are around.

I would suggest talking with people directly about it and saying something like “I understand that you want to speak in your own language when you are with your friends, but if I’m around and I don’t understand that language, do you think that we could all speak English together?” Of course, they can also translate for you – and what a great opportunity for you to learn other languages!

Hi, I am currently 17 and I am about to finish High School, and I am thinking of a job at the airport. The airport where I live is, Vancouver International Airport, and I can speak Hindi, Punjabi, and English fluently. And plus there is a big population of South Asians, speaking these languages in the Metro Vancouver Area. I have NO EXPERIENCE OF ANY WORK AT A AIRPORT. but I do have experience, for customer service from fast food chains. Can anyone guide me in a way to get a job with a Airline as a check in agent, or anyother job at a airport with GOOD PAY.

Hi there I work for BA in check in, firstly check and make sure the airlines you would like to work for are recruiting, then make sure you have done some research on the job. because when you apply and get through to interview they may ask you questions about the company and the job, also with your customer service background they will ask you for examples of customer service, for example they may ask you to give a time where you went the extra mile or if you were a passenger what would you expect as customer service, also they want you to really sell yourself.

your languages are a big bonus as I am multi lingual and you do use them all the time. And you will always get especially the indian languages people who dont speak english needing that extra bit of help.
Ground work is fantastic and I love every minute of it, yes we get days were we would love to throttle passengers but everyday is different and you meet all sorts of people from all different cultures. Also make sure your tolerance levels good because you will be put in situations where you will really need to keep your cool.
Best of luck with your career and hope you go far

After I complete high school (here in Vancouver) I was thinking of moving to Finland for at least 5 years or longer.

1. If I leave for Finland, would it be hard to gain citizenship before I arrive? (no relatives in Canada with Finnish citizenship + only somewhat distant relatives in Finland)

2. Would it be hard for an English speaker to live and possibly work in Finland

3. Would be hard for me to get a job + housing considering my Finnish language abilities are limited to the numbers 0-10.

4. When I arrive into Finland as a “citizen” would I have to join civil service or military? Would I also be able to receive a lower cost of post secondary education?

I was also thinking (just idea, but no real plan) of moving with my girlfriend whom I’ve been dating for 2 years

+ how could I tell my parents that, that is what I wanna do.

1. No you have to live in Finland for six years before you can apply for citizenship. Only if one of your parents are Finnish citizens can you apply for citizenship through family relations.

2-3. It would be difficult for you to get a job that pays a decent amount of money if you don't speak the language. Try and take at least some basic courses before you arrive. Housing shouldn't be an issue because of your language. Finland is not allowed to discriminate like that.

4. As you cannot be a citizen when you arrive you can't join the Finnish military. You will also have to pay international student fees.

I moved to the US to study from Sweden. One parent was very supportive while the other was not. Just make sure you have all the facts about costs and visa rules and such before you speak to them. That way they can't get you with "Have you thought about this? And this?" If they can see that you have really thought it through and that it isn't just a thing of the moment they may be more supportive.
