Why must high school students in America study another language to graduate?

My questions are mostly targeted at the Spanish language. I am from Texas by way of Louisiana. Unfortunately like many small rural towns my high school only offered one language class, Spanish. How is it fair that to graduate, students have to study and be able to conversationally speak Spanish?

When I go to Wal*Mart and to other places in this state, most Hispanics or Spanish people (from Mexico) do not speak English to me for ease of communication. They expect me to speak only Spanish to them. I do not feel right having children of grown people translate back and forth for the sake of communication.

There are many cultures in the United States of America- but in many southern states it seems to me that of the Asain, French, Russian, German etc. cultures they can communicate in English, but the few of the spanish cultures can.

Another question, unless I choose to, why must I learn a language of another culture to graduate (I love the french language, as I am coonass and have studied it early in my education.)
Also, how does the majority of people feel on this question-
Has the American English language been overtaken by the Spanish language?

Learning a foriegn language helps oyu in foreign affairs and it helps you learn about the English language (what a verb is, conjugation etc.)

I know Russian and English. For high school i dont know what i should take- German, french, Latin, or Spanish?

I am native to Russian, but i dont know what i should take… im into cars, math, building, and learning new languages. Please help. Thanks… and yes i also know english.

out of the four that you listed i would suggest spanish simply because it is spoken by more people and in more countries than the other three

I’m going to the 8th grade, and I took French during my seventh grade year. I will take French again in the 8th grade year, so I will have French I for high school. I’m planning to take on Latin in high school, along with another language. Should I still take French, or take another? (Japanese, German, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Spanish)
I particulary like Japanese (I’m Korean by the way), because I love anime and the Japanese culture. But I don’t want to waste middle school French.

Which should I take??
Yes , my school offers all these languages, and btw I also know Korean, so I'm bilingual already.

I know that you said that you are already bilingual and you don’t say what part of the world you live in (Korea, England, the US, etc.), but what you should take into consideration is the languages spoken in the particular area in which you live. For example, the US has a very diverse population, culturally, but unless you are going to go to work for the United Nations in New York, you probably wouldn’t have much use in taking Russian or Greek and would probably have much more use to learn Spanish, or Chinese.

Employers tend to seek out a person who can speak and understand the language of its client base and land a much better job than someone who only knows one language and in your case, just knowing more than one language is going to give you the upper hand, and the more you know, the better it is for you (you can always try finding a job as a language translator.)

I don't know what I wanna be when I am all grown up but I am entering high school next year. What language should I take? They have:

Spanish
Mandarin
Japanese
French
Korean
Russian

I know they'll all be challenging. It seems overwhelming to learn a whole other language. I only speak English. Language is required so what would be interesting and pay off later possibly?

1.) what kind of GPA

2.) im fluent in russian but do med school and etc really look at forien language grades. since im already bi-lingual?

-AND-

3.) does science, bio, chem,physics, etc have to come easy and natural. or can you work for it because you enjoy it and you find it interesting.

1) A high one, the higher the better.
2) I'm not sure. Prob not.
3) You can work for it. If you enjoy it and find it interesting that will just make it easier to read and do the work.

Choosing a foreign language in college?

Currently I am in my third year of taking spanish(only foreign language course offered at my school) at high school, but I plan on taking either German or Russian. Any input would be helpful!
Should I choose a German language course or Russian or if you have a personal reference on a language feel free to put it!

Well, I took Spanish all four years in high school, and am still taking it now in college (I'm definitely minoring in it, but possibly majoring). So obviously I am a little biased towards Spanish. It's a very practical language for basically any career you would chose (I don't know where you live, but this is especially true if you live in the US). I use it all the time. Also, since you have already taken 3 years, it will be easier to continue rather than switching to a completely different language. Also, usually at the college level there are more opportunities with the Spanish programs, like study abroad, if you're interested in that (because it's a popular language).

That's just my personal preference though. Really, just go with your gut and do what interests you. If you hate learning something, you'll never really learn it.

I'm interested in minoring in foreign languages ((specifically Italian, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Chinese, and Portuguese)) in college. Really, that's the main thing I'm concerned with–finding a college with a very good language-learning program.

Oxford is my main school because of its psych program ((my major)) and distance from America, but really, I'm open to any school that isn't a state school ((especially not Mizzou)).

Any suggestions?

Almost any top college or universary would offer courses in psychology and languages.

I'd stay away from technical universaries [e.g., MIT and Cal Tech] because those aren't their specialties. You seem reasonably intellegent [at least you ask a cogent question]. Why don't you pick several cities or countries and see what schools they have to offer.

Of course, you could always apply to the Sorbonne in Paris. See below.
