What languages are taught in schools in Germany?

I'm going to be a foreign exchange student to Germany for my 11th grade year of high school. I don't know what kind of school that would be in Germany, but, what are languages I could choose to take in that country?
I'm really hoping Russian is taught there ^^

English is big there, you might see French, Dutch, Spanish, and possibly Russian.

does anyone know about the test u take if u arent takeing a language in high school but are fluent in another language (russian)for the UC system?

I don't think one exists. They require 2-3 years of acutal class. However, you can check with your counselor in HS or call the UC school you want to apply to. Maybe if you could get into your high school's AP class and take the test that might work. I'm pretty sure they won't let you take the AP test without taking the class though.

Which schools offer double/joint majors in linguistics and a foreign language?

I want to major in linguistics and Russian. Which universities facilitate these?

Arizona State University in Phoenix. They have a specialized "slavic languages" department in the linguistics department.

English is my first language, I am very close to reaching fluency in Spanish, and I am currently taking Chinese in high school.

I was thinking about learning Croatian as a 4th language but I think that something like Russian or Arabic would be more useful as a businessman.

However if I were to work with the government it seems as though a language of a small random country like Croatian would help me to get a higher job due to the scarcity of speakers.

What do you think?

I believe that American Sign Language (or the native sign language of which ever country you live, if not US/Canada) is beneficial for all hearing people to learn. Since you know so many hearing language, a sign language can now help you to expand into another community which has a rich culture and a lot to offer!

And you’ll learn about Deaf Culture which will make you one less hearing person to be ignorant of our community and culture!

Im a high school junior and I have around a 3.4 unweighted GPA and a 3.9 weighted GPA for my freshman and sophmore years. This year I am taking three AP's and the rest honors which will boost up my GPA. The first time I took the ACT I got a 26 but im hoping to raise it to at least a 28 or a 29 on Feb. My top school choices are
-George Washington U.
-American U.
-Boston U.
I want to study Pre-Med and russian language.

I also understand these schools are very expensive. We are a family of four and I know with my parents income they cant pay all of it. Around how much do my parents need to make so i could get some financial aid from FAFSA.

Use collegeboard to get the GPA of admitted student for each of the schools and you can also see a list of majors offered, I believe. Visit these school's websites since most give out ACT/SAT and GPA averages.

There is no guaranteed set amount you can receive from the government, it is dependent on your expected family contribution (EFC) which is what the FAFSA is used to determine. The smaller the EFC, the more potential aid you can receive from the government.

I would highly recommend that you start looking for scholarships if you believe your parent's income will put you at a disadvantage for aid. Fastweb.com is a good scholarship website to use.

How much should I charge for one-to-one language tuition?

I'm a qualified schoolteacher living in the UK with a PGCE in teaching modern foreign languages from Cambridge University. I have two years experience teaching French, Spanish and Russian in a secondary school. I have a possible private student wanting to learn Portuguese, how much do you think I should charge per hour. (I have two years experience living in Brazil and my Portuguese is as fluent as you could wish from a non-native speaker) This is my first private student – I don't want to charge too much, but I also don't want to charge so little that it looks unprofessional.
Phew – thanks folks – I had already said £15 per hour but was wondering if I hadn't overpriced it as I saw a couple of adverts for Spanish tuition in London for £8 an hour. You've reassured me that I've done the right thing. OK, will just have to wait 24 hours to pick the best answer now.

Why Don't Many Americans Learn Russian?

I signed up for Russian for school, and I was looking at number of people in Russian compared to other foreign languages at my school. Russian had a bunch of open spots while Spanish, French, German, and even Chinese were nearly filled up to the max.

Any ideas?

As far as Spanish goes, it's just the most useful to learn here in the US. Plus French has a lot of fans because its "romantic." I've also known a lot of people that took German but many of them had German blood in them so it made sense because it connects them to their past. I live in a military town so many of them had German parents or grandparents. Where I live there aren't all that many Russians or people of Russian descent so it makes sense. Although I'd like to learn Russian and French and Chinese. I took Spanish in school and lived in Germany for 8 years so I know a little German (I was there as a child). I've been to France but I only traveled there and I'd like to learn other languages (at least the basics) so I can travel there too.
Good for you for learning Russian. I think its great.

Preferably used, considering I don’t have all that much money to spend.
I was thinking about a textbook like the ones that they use in highschool French and Spanish classes, and surely there are Russian language classes at some schools? What do they use?

I did find this one called “Golosa” but it got a few very negative reviews on Amazon so I’m not too sure. Any tips?

Some people, it seems, have the ability to see an opportunity to be a smart@ss in everything. It must take talent, yes?

I always liked Charles Duff’s *Russian for Beginners.* It’s very clear and thorough, and well organized so it’s easy to skip around to find particular constructions that you need. Put it together with a good dictionary like Romanov’s and you can learn a lot fast.

If you need a bigger textbook with tons of examples and exercises, the series that HBJ published in the 1970s just called *Russian* were awfully good, but I don’t know where you’d find them anymore except by scouring used bookstores. *Golosa* does seem to be the standard from what I can see.
