Reverse Dictionary – Ever asked yourself “Whats the word for…”

Posted by: admin  :  Category: foreign language school

I just happened to detect a pretty interesting tool today.

I used to be making an attempt to find a word for “People that are behind the days” for my previous blog post.  I did a number of searches in Google while not avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word.  A tool where I would give the definition, and it would offer me some words that matched that definition.  What I discovered was Onelook.com’s Reverse Dictionary.

Reverse Dictionaries enable you to “Describe a concept” in order to search out words that match that description.

Cool Stuff, particularly for all people non-harvard graduates.

What I find the foremost fascinating though is all of the uses for this tool.  It’s really a very smart search engine.  You’d be suprized the sort of answers you may get from asking a variety of questions.  Here are some of potential applications that OneLook describes:

– Find a word, when you recognize its definition, [or a portion of the definition].
– Explore related concepts. Baseball, clouds, cities.
– Generate an inventory of words in some category.  I.E. Large Birds, Green fruit, Canadian authors.
– Answer basic indentification questions.  What’s the capital of Vietnam, Who is huge birds friend on Sesame Street. What’s the longest River in the globe

Really Onelook is indexing a lot of more then just dictionaries to find these answers.  They index encyclopedia’s and other reference sites as well.

I dont understand concerning you guys, however if I had a very giant amount of cash, I might consider making an attempt to shop for their technology.  There are a lot of times I want the major search engines may do some of the stuff that they are.  Ask.com (askjeeves) does some of this, but you cant get lists from Ask, its sometimes websites that come up that need you to sift through several pages to find your answers.

For all of you content mongers out there, this sort of technology might feed some very fascinating sites.

I would love to work out some sort of API.

How I learned a new language in three short months using audio books

Posted by: admin  :  Category: foreign language school

Like everyone, French lessons were compulsory during my school days, but I never really took them seriously. In my honest opinion, something like that just wasn't of any importance to me, and probably never would be.

Like everyone I know, you just figure that English is more popular and that you can get along anywhere with your own knowledge of the English language, right?

Oh my, how wrong could I have been.

I realized my mistake when I was sent to France for an assignment. I was like a real fish out of water.

Literally everywhere I went, restaurants, bars, shops, galleries, offices, transport - everyone was speaking French. Finding somebody who could speak my native tongue was like trying to find someone in England who could speak Swahili.

Yikes, I just felt completely lost.

That experience nonetheless, I still made a silent resolve not to learn the language, since I wasn't going to be coming back to France.

My boss told me when I got back that I'd be returning to France in 3 months. Not only that, but this time I would be staying for much longer than the last time.

I protested, but she didn't bulge.

There and then I made a commitment to myself to learn French before the 3 months was up.

Being a lover of audio books, I went right ahead and bought some “Teach yourself French” foreign language audio books which I played while preparing for work in the morning, while exercising, during my commute to and from work and any other time when my hands were busy but my mind was free.

To be honest, I didn't really pay too much attention to the "Teach yourself French" lessons in the beginning, because it was all very strange to me.

As the time wore on, it all started to sink in and make sense to me. What really helped was the translations to English for any word spoken in French.

This really confirmed what I had read sometime ago about the power of listening. No wonder God gave us 2 ears and just one mouth. You can learn virtually any language from just listening - it really is that powerful.

I couldn't believe it, but I gradually started to pick up the language and was able to master quite an large amount of French just six weeks after I had started.

Can you just imagine the look on my superior's face, when I spoke to her completely in French without even mixing it a little with English!

She was amazed by my achievement and wanted to know exactly how I'd done it. So I told her my secret - it was audio books!

My superior was so amazed and impressed that I had taken the time to learn the language, that she promoted me to the head of delegation for the next trip we had planned to France. I was going to represent our entire company.

She made sure every other member of my team got their foreign language audio books and did exactly what I had done.

When I eventually got back to France 3 months later, I was no longer "a fish out of water".

It was incredible, but I was able to achieve this without taking any classes, without hiring any private French tutor, without reading any "French tutorial" books.

All of this was possible within 3 months just listening to French audio book lessons.

Do you know what was most intriguing about this? I did this all in my "free" time. I didn't commit any special time to this, but the same time I had wasted in the past.

Now, if I could do this within just three months, I am absolutely certain that anyone else can do it too.

I can honestly say that if there is any foreign language that you are itching to learn, do exactly as I did and you'll be amazed by the results in just three months, simply from the power of audio books.

There are several audio book versions of many books on learning foreign languages that you can get on the Internet.

You can start your search from SpokenNetwork.com direct, or through the many search engines. Simply type in the phrase or particular title you are interested in and you will be presented with the best results… within seconds.
